“Discover the Possibilities”.
Quitman
Elementary is dedicated to uncovering the best in every child. The largest
school in the district, yet it provides small, differentiated classroom
instruction. The average class size in grades K-3 is 18 to 20. Quitman is the
proud recipient of a $500,000 grant to enhance our reading program through the
state Reading First grant. Students participate in 135 minutes of daily Reading
Instruction with small group individualized attention. Additional small group
intervention classes are offered for struggling students to boost their reading
achievement. Each classroom library has an average of 10 books per child. Our
school media center has over 35,000 books and a computer work station. The
curriculum at Quitman Elementary is aligned to the Georgia Performance Standards
(GPS) to ensure that students are well prepared for national and state
assessments. With common planning, teachers are able to collaborate and plan
with each other to ensure continuity throughout the grade level. Teachers are
provided ongoing staff development in current reading and math strategies.
Students participate daily in enriching block activities such as music, art,
physical education, technology, character education, and media skills. A full
time nurse and counselor are on staff at Quitman Elementary. The school was
awarded as an Exemplary School and has been named as a Distinguished School for
exceeding the state's rate of gain on the Criterion-Referenced Competency Test (CRCT)
for five consecutive years.
