BCMS Students in Jennifer Laxton’s 6th grade Advanced Reading class will soon be reading the novel, Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. To help prepare for this book, students conducted internet research and wrote essays discussing survival in the wilderness. They specifically looked up information to satisfy their basic needs. Making a fire became a point of interest in the class discussion so Laxton invited her husband, SSgt Matthew Laxton, to come talk with the students about survival. SSgt Laxton brought with him TSgt Randy Van Horn to show the students the different ways to start a fire with available materials. Both have been to Survival Training School in the Air Force and are a part of the 41st Search and Rescue Squadron at Moody AFB. After starting a fire with aluminum foil, cotton balls dipped in Vaseline, and sticks the students made s’mores.

Students in Advanced Reading classes at Brooks County Middle School are enjoying participating in Literary Circles. The classes are divided into groups of four and are assigned to read a book together. Each student is assigned a role of either, Illustrator, Writer, Vocabulary, and Tracer. With their roles they research and discuss among their group what they felt was important with the sections they had read. The groups share their work and discuss their findings with the class to explore how books are interpreted.
