Grade Breakdown:  Your grade in this course will be based on three (3) components.

 Tests:               45%         Classwork       40%        Homework:     15%

Tests:  This portion of the grade will be made up of Unit tests, 9 Week tests and Projects.  Every test will be announced at least one week before the testing date as well as on the team calendar.  Before each test, you will be given a set of problems to complete as a study guide.  Completion of the study guide is not mandatory but strongly suggested.  All students who complete the study guide in its entirety will receive five bonus points on the test.  All test grades stand as they are, however, students are given the opportunity to correct their tests for a higher test grade.  Students can and should correct their tests with assistance from parents, siblings, and teachers.  All tests and quizzes signed by a parent will receive an extra five points.  There is no penalty for not correcting a test.

  • Projects:  Students will be assigned a culminating project at the end of each unit.  Projects will involve using math in real world situations and some will have a writing component.
  • Portfolio:  It is important that students keep track of their progress in mathematics.  Portfolios will include work completed throughout the semester and students will be expected to reflect on pieces they are proud of.  These portfolios should show a positive progression in the students work.  The portfolio is a project and will count as part of the students’ test grade.

Classwork:  This portion of the grade will include students work with others, journal entries, and tickets-out-the-door.  It is important that students learn to work with peers, ask questions, pay attention, and play an active roll in the classroom.

  • Quizzes:  Quizzes can be announced or unannounced.  Keeping a neat and organized notebook is important and random timed notebook quizzes will be given.  These quizzes will ask for answers and elements of homework, previous tests, quizzes, and projects.  Students will have the opportunity to correct their quizzes to earn back half of the points lost.  As with tests, students can also earn 5 bonus points for parent signatures.

Homework:  Students will be assigned homework 2-4 times per week.  Each homework assignment must be completed in its entirety showing thoughtful and organized work.  Homework will also be graded on the number of correct answers.  Students must attempt each problem to receive full credit.  Students who are missing assignments will be brought in during lunch to complete the assignment as well as an additional assignment.  No homework will be accepted after the test date of the unit in which the homework was assigned.  In the event that a unit is not completed by the end of the 9 weeks in which it is started, all homework assigned during that 9 week period must be turned in by the end of the grading period.
