Welcome to Mrs. Sharon Herring's Webpage

I look forward to an exciting year of adventure and discovery as your children and I explore Earth Science.  Units of study will include the following topics:

  • Rocks and Minerals
  • Weathering and Erosion
  • Inside the Earth (Earth’s layers and Plate Tectonics)
  • Water in Earth’s Processes
  • Climate and Weather
  • Universe and the Solar System
  • Earth, Moon, and Sun
  • Human Impact ( Natural resources and the impact that we have on our environment)

Each unit of study also integrates lab experiences and field work using the processes of Scientific Inquiry.  (Characteristics of Science)

All units of study are based on the Georgia Performance Standards for 6th grade Science.  These are listed in the front of your child’s Science textbook.  (Pages GA 24-GA 36)

I use the textbook as one of many resources for teaching the content standards and characteristics of Science.  I use other sources of media in my classroom as well.  I use videos by Bill Nye the Science Guy, United Streaming through the Discovery Channel, as well as other web sites that provide curriculum resources to support our GPS standards.

At the beginning of each unit of study, I provide a Student Learning Map which gives an outline of the main idea of the unit, the content areas of the unit, essential questions, and vocabulary.  I also try to include a list of web sites that I have found helpful.
