Welcome to Katie Small's First Grade Class!

"Learning makes the world grow brighter!"

News and Events

First grade is a very difficult grade.  The key to learning in this grade is listening and following directions. This is  very difficult for many children, but with teacher guidance and supportive parents our little ones will succeed.

    Math

Right now we are learning about telling time to the hour and half hour.  We are also learning how to read a calendar and a schedule.

In math we completed a  speical unit on counting collections of objects up 100. Mrs. Small's class celebrated the 100th day of school by each student completing a chart with 100 items. The students were excited about this project.

Can you believe we have been in school

100 days?

   Reading

Our Unit 4 stories will focus on the theme "Let's Find Out!".  Our stories for the next few weeks will be the Shopping List, Yasmin's Ducks, the Knee High Man, JohnnyAppleseed, and Ring! Ring! Put Out the Fire.  We will be learning about cause and effect relationships and how to make inferences.

     Grammar

We are still learning how to write types of sentences(statements, questions, and exclamations) to help us write narrative, informational, and expository pieces.  Daily exposure to the writing process will help students become great authors.  We will focus on inflectional endings and describing words in the next unit.

Phonics/Spelling

We are reviewing our vowels and consonants to help learn how to spell our words.  We will be focusing on short vowels, long vowels, digraphs, blends, and inflectional endings this year. Currently, we are working on final stable syllables and how to identify y as a vowel.

Science/Social Studies

We are learning about kinds of animals.
