BCHS Science Department
Science Course Offerings:
9th grade Physical Science-is a branch of science that deals with energy, physics, chemistry, and astronomy. Physical Science is a natural science.
10th grade Biology (prerequisite-passing grade in Physical Science)-Biology is the study and science of living organisms. The study of biology includes the function, structure, growth, origin, and evolution of that particular organism. It's a very interesting thing to learn about.
11th – 12th grade (prerequisite-passing grade in Biology for all of the upper level classes)
*Environmental Science- Environmental science is the study of the environment. It is the study of the interaction of different types of elements found usually in nature. It combines the physical and social sciences so that we can get a broader view of how things interact.
* Chemistry- the science concerned with the composition, structure, and properties of matter, as well as the changes it undergoes during chemical reactions. Chemistry is the study of the nature, properties, and composition of matter, and how these undergo changes.
* Anatomy- The branch of science concerned with the structure of the body and the relationship of its organs.
* Physics-("nature" and "knowledge of nature") is the branch of science concerned with the fundamental laws of the Universe. It deals with the elementary constituents of the universe—matter, energy, space, and time—and their interactions.
*AP Biology- is a course and examination offered by the College Board to high school students as an opportunity to earn placement credit for a college-level biology course. Since the 2012–2013 school year the College Board has unveiled a new curriculum with a greater focus on scientific practices. This course is offered to highly motivated students who wish to pursue their interests in the life sciences.
*Earth Space Science- This course is designed to have students observe our Earth, not as a collection of separate spheres, but rather as a dynamic system of interacting parts. They will discover that we ourselves are a critical component that must be respectful of the impact that we impose on the conditions of our Earth system.
Science Grading Policy: Student grades are calculated based on the following percentages for grading periods (4-9weeks).
60% Test (including final exam)
40% Daily work (Quizzes, homework, etc.)
The final grade is determined by the score on the EOCT which is 20% of the total grade for the courses that have an EOCT test.
Labs are a large part of the science classes and are done on a routine basis. Students are required to participate in the lab experiences as a part of the curriculum.
Students are required to sign and follow the rules and regulations of safety that comply with the national standards for high schools.
Notebooks are required for all classes
Other Items needed: rulers, calculators, protractors, graph paper, colored pencils/or markers
