Students create Bio Diesel Fuel in Class!

Students at Brooks County High School are learning great things in Mr. Morgan's Research, Design and Project Management class!  Students have learned how to produce their first batch of Biodiesel. The fuel is an alternative fuel for vehicles requiring diesel fuel. "These students have the opportunity to be involved, from the beginning, in an industry in our country, Biofuels.  Biodiesel performs like Petrodiesel in every way except that it releases less toxic emissions into the environment. And, it's cheaper," said Morgan. Used cooking oil collected from nearby restaurants was used once it was strained of solid contaminants.  The water is removed by heat or being allowed to settle. Then the oil is mixed with a solution of Methanol and Sodium Hydroxide. The last step consists of the solution separating into the Biodiesel and a glycerin layer.

Currently, the Engineering and Technology department purchased a 20 gallon processor to produce biodiesel as both an instructional activity and possible fundraiser for the Technology Student Association (TSA) chapter. Biofuels can be made from plant waste, used oil and many other renewable domestic sources.

8th Grade Pathways Tour Brooks County High School hosted a Pathway Tour for local 8th graders. The students participated in 10-minute segments consisting of information about each pathway within the high school.

Honor Grads

Twenty seven Brooks County High School graduating Seniors are Honor Graduates. High school Registrar and Counselor, Whitney T. Monetti  said that the number of honor graduates has been on the rise for the last four years. There are a total of 122 graduating seniors set to receive their high school diplomas this Spring. “The class of 2012 has always been a competitive class academically. They are a very focused group of students and have worked hard to maintain their “A” average,” she said.  Monetti said that this particular group of graduates withhold spectacular academic achievements and are also highly involved within the school. “They will definitely be missed next year, but we look for this group of students to do big things,” she said.
