Dr. Elena Ponder
Dr. Elena Ponder was born and raised in New York. She began her educational career in the Brooks County school system 20 years ago. Her employment in the Brooks County School System has allowed her to obtain a broad range of leadership experiences. During her employment, she has served as a high school science teacher, elementary school assistant principal, elementary school principal, Title I Director, and middle and high school assistant principal. She is a graduate of Adelphi University in Long Island, N.Y. with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Pre-Med. She received her Master’s degree in Educational Leadership and Secondary Education Science from Valdosta State University. She has an Educational Specialist degree and Doctoral degree in the area of Educational Leadership.
She believes that student success depends on a collaboration of a devoted community, structured curriculum, and a caring and supportive faculty. The success of students is always a top priority. Brooks County High School works together to address the elements that affect our children: effective teaching, school safety and security, and the continuous improvement efforts focused on results. The school wants every student to achieve future-readiness. In order to do so, the faculty and staff will direct all their energy to improving the level of learning throughout this outstanding institute.
Mr. Horace Walker
Horace Walker is a native of Turner County (Ashburn, GA). He moved to Valdosta in 1987 to attend Valdosta State University. In 1991, he received a Bachelor of Business Administration in Management. Immediately after receiving his BBA, he began working on his certification in Business Education (1993). Over the years, he has obtained a Master of Education in Business Education (1995), Educational Specialist (Business Education (2002) and Educational Leadership (2009)).
In 1994, he began his tenure in Brooks County Schools as a high school Business Education Teacher. After teaching Business for 12 years, he moved to the position of Graduation Coach which he held for 7 years (5 of which he also served as 9th and 10th grade Counselor). In 2013, Mr. Walker was named Assistant Principal at Brooks County Middle School. During his time in the Brooks County School System, Mr. Walker has served as Brooks County High School’s Teacher of the year twice, was name STAR Teacher in 2004, and has received several nominations for Who’s Who Among American Teachers from past students, in addition to serving on several school committees.
Mr. Walker is married to Sonja and they have one son, Jakob.
