QES Spelling Bee Finalist

Quitman Elementary School 1st Place Spelling Bee Winner Tatiana Conger and runner up, Ezekiel Holloway will go on to compete in the district wide Spelling Bee on February 7th at 4 p.m. at the local Public Library.

Kindergarten Lunch and Learn

QES kindergarten lunch and learnOver 70 parents attended the Kindergarten Lunch and Learn at Quitman Elementary.  Parents learned about the Georgia Performance Standard Curriculum for Kindergarten and ways they can help their child succeed.  Educational and school spirit doorprizes were given out.  After the learning session parents were able to eat lunch with their child. Cowboys and Cowgirls at QES

Second graders at Quitman Elementary dressed in their best western attire recently as they finished reading, “Round Up at Rio Ranch” by Angela Shelf Medearis. Each week the students in the elementary schools have a different story to read.  To help reinforce what they are reading the weekly vocabulary words come from the stories they read.

QES' Mia Felkel Named System Teacher of the Year

Quitman Elementary Special Education Teacher, Mia Felkel, learned that she is the new Brooks County Schools' System Teacher of the Year.  Before a crowd of peers at the Annual County-Wide Back to SchoolQES System TOTY Felkel meeting Teacher of the Year Coordinator, Dr. Deborah Demps made the announcement.  Felkel received a prize package from local businesses they are, Brooks County Farm Bureau, Lydia Hubert Photography, Stevens- McGhee Funeral Home, Colony Bank, Everetts’ Well Drilling & Irrigation, Sisters Buffett, Ameris Bank, and Moss Car Wash & Detail.

“I am very honored to represent such a hard working and dedicated school system, stated Felkel. “With me being so far from my home, it is comforting and reassuring knowing that I work for a school system that has taken me in and offered a supportive and caring family for me to rely on. I love my job, the students, and the staff at Brooks County and I am thankful for the opportunity to be the Teacher of the Year!” This South Dakotan has taught school for seven years.  Two years in South Dakota and 5 here in Brooks County.  She has taught Pre-K, 4th grade, 2nd grade and now Special Education.  Felkel attended Dakota State University in Madison, SD where she received her Bachelor in Early Childhood and Special Education.  She received her Masters from Troy University in Education and recently finished a Specialist degree through Nova Southeastern with a degree in the BrainSMART program.   She decided to go into teaching because she always enjoyed school as a child and young adult. 

 Each principal recognized their schools’ Teacher of the Year with a special plaque.  They are BCHS- Sridevi Dasyam, BCMS- Felicia Hill, NBES- Charles Martin, and QES- Mia Felkel.  Now being named as the System Teacher of the Year, Felkel will compete among other teachers in the state for the Georgia Teacher of the Year.
