NBES’ Third Grade Class Presents, “First”
North
Brooks Elementary School third grade program, "First," was about
famous people who were the first
to invent something new. It highlighted well-known inventors such as Alexander
Graham Bell and the Wright Brothers, and others who are not so well known such
as the inventor of the dictionary, Samuel Johnson, and the inventor of the
windshield wiper, Mary Anderson. It also spotlighted African-American inventors
like Dr. Charles Drew who invented the blood bank, Garrett Morgan who invented
the first traffic light, and Chef Charles Crum who is credited with inventing
the potato chip. The program ended with the message that anyone can achieve
great things if they follow their dreams.

NBES Celebrates Read Across America
To celebrate Read Across America,
North Brooks Elementary started the day with Green Eggs and Ham for
breakfast. Then the school had a costume contest and
parade in the halls with
teachers and students dressed up as their favorite storybook character. Drew J.
(3rd grade) was the winner for best costume. He was dressed as
Poseidon from The Percy Jackson Series.
A storybook museum was set up in the media center, objects were displayed
from different books including: Harry Potter’s wand, Officer Buckles’ badge, A
scale from the Library Dragon, and Fancy Nancy’s boa. Guest readers
visited the classrooms reading books throughout the day. Then parents
were invited to attend AR Family Reading night.

A Heart for Haiti
Kelvin Sharp, a fifth grader at North Brooks Elementary, was moved by the horrific pictures of the earthquake victims in Haiti. As this young man watched the nightly news his heart ached to help. As a commercial flashed across the screen asking people to donate money for Haiti, Kelvin knew exactly how he could help. The next day he asked his teacher if North Brooks Elementary could do something by raising money to help the people in this country. His teacher was touched by his tenderness and arranged for him to talk with Principal Ervin Sloan. This is where “NBES has a Heart for Haiti” was born. To raise money Principal Sloan and staff included Kelvin in planning a week’s worth activities for the staff and students. Kelvin was thrilled to see his classmates and teachers join in the effort. “I felt so sorry for the people after the earthquake,” stated Kelvin. “They had lost everything they had.” Kelvin even got his family involved by having them take him to local businesses and neighbors asking for donations. The total amount raised by the school for Haiti was $869.30. The money will be sent to the Valdosta chapter of the American Red Cross. Kelvin is pictured here on the right showing his friend where Haiti is on the world globe.

Congratulations to NBES for Making AYP!
The Georgia
Department of Education released the final Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP)
report this week and all four schools in the Brooks County System made
AYP. As the new rigorous curriculum has
challenged students and teachers alike, everyone has worked extremely hard and
test scores continue to improve. To meet
AYP each school must meet the following criteria: 95% Participation Rate in
State Assessments, Academic Performance on State Assessments, and a Second
Indicator. The Second Indicators for our
system are Graduation Rate for Brooks County High School, and Student Attendance
for Brooks County Middle School, Quitman Elementary School, and North Brooks Elementary
School. “I am very proud that our
students and staff at all of our schools have achieved this major goal in our
system,” stated Superintendent Debra Folsom. North Brooks Elementary has made the AYP list
for eight years. NBES Principal Ervin
Sloan stated, “It is always a great feeling to make
AYP. It makes you very proud of your staff who works extra hard to make
it possible. Our staff worked hard in the math area to improve our
scores. We targeted weaknesses and developed strategies to make sure students
were successful in those areas. Going up 12% is a great accomplishment.”
