Parent University 2012- January 28, 2012
Thank you Parents and Presenters for another GREAT Parent University
The 3rd Annual Parent University was held Saturday, January 29 at Brooks County Middle School. "Each year we have had approximately 30 parents in attendance", stated Lydia Hubert, Parent Involvement/Community Relations, "In years past we have had about 50% of those registered attend, this year we had 90% of those registered attend which we feel was a true success." Parents attended workshops on "How to Save Money at the Grocery Store", "Parent Child Quality Time", "Eating in a Fast-Pace Lifestyle", "Wiregrass Georgia Technical College is Here." and many others. ECHOES 21st Century Learning Communities provided refreshments and child care. Door prizes were donated by Angel Food Ministries, Wiregrass Technical College, Brooks County Family Connection, and the Brooks County Schools. Each parent received a goodie bags with items donated by Colony Bank of Quitman, Wiregrass Georgia Technical College, Brooks County Farm Bureau, Southern Pediatric Clinic, and Brooks County Schools. Pictured was a popular class taught by Sharon Cunningham, Director of Career, Technical, and Ag Education the workshop was on "Eating in the Fast-Pace Lifestyle."
This parent event is co-sponsored by the School Parent Involvement program and the ECHOES 21st Century Community Learning Centers program. Parents are invited to come to the middle school on a Saturday morning to attend workshops and gather information to help them assist their children in school. Many businesses donate door prizes for the half-day workshop. Some of the businesses who have donated door prizes in the past are, Valdosta Technical College, Signarama, Brooks County Farm Bureau, Colony Bank, Brooks County Economic Development, and Ameris Bank. This was a collaborative effort between all schools and is an annual event. The purpose of Parent University is to communicate with and engage parents and guardians with PreK – 12th grade students in small workshop sessions on how to be more involved as partners with the Brooks County Schools and to educate parents about important issues that our students face in the 21st century.
