The 2009-2010 BCHS Valedictorian and Salutatorian
Brooks County High
School Principal Howard Akers is pleased to announce the 2009-2010 Valedictorian,
Hannah Hodum and Salutatorian, Stephanie Williams. Hodum is the daughter of Arnold and Teresa
Hodum. After graduation she plans to
attend Valdosta State University and major in sports medicine/athletic
training or physical therapy. Her
extra-curricular activities and community involvement include playing softball,
soccer, and being a member of the Colony Bank Junior Board and the
Quitman-Brooks County Chamber of Commerce Junior Board. Some of her honors
include highest average in Physical Science, Human Anatomy, Spanish I, Exercise
and Weight Control, Algebra II, Algebra III, 9th Grade Honors
Literature, and 11th Grade Honors Literature. Hannah’s motivation comes from a quote from
Mia Hamm, “Celebrate what you’ve accomplished, but raise the bar a little
higher each time you succeed.” Williams
is the daughter of Steve and Dana Williams.
She plans to attend Mercer University to become a Pharmacist. While in high school she has been a member of
Student Council serving as President, Co-editor of Yearbook and on the Colony
Bank Junior Board. Her honors include Highest Average in Geometry, 9th
Grade Literature, and 10th Grade Literature. Her motto is “No one can make you feel
inferior without your consent,” a quote from Eleanor Roosevelt. We congratulate
both these young ladies and wish them well!

Five BCHS Football Players Sign Scholarships
On official college signing day five Brooks County High School football players committed to area colleges to play football. Before a crowd of parents, school staff, and the news media Head Football Coach Maurice Freeman wished his senior players the best of luck and encouraged them to always put their education first. Those who signed on signing day were Rodney Thomas, Linebacker, Fort Valley State University; Lawrence Virgil, Offensive Tackle, Valdosta State University; Keith Christopher, Running Back, Albany State University; Kendrick Christopher, Defensive Back, Albany State University; and Donte West, Defensive End, Albany State University. Hampton Places in State Wiring Competition
Brooks County High School Senior Nick Hampton recently went to State Competition in Wiring after placing 2nd in Region at the Colquitt EMC Wiring Competition. At the state level Hampton placed 4th. We congratulate Nick on his hard work.
Writing Fair Winners
Students at all four schools submitted essays in the Young Georgia Author's Writing Competition. This competition was open to students in grades K-12th. Teachers submitted a class representative then grade level winners were chosen. The winners will be recognized at the county-wide Academic Reception in April at the High School and everyone's work will be on display at the Valdosta Mall. The Young Georgia Author's Writing Fair Competition is sponsored by RESA (Regional Educational Service Agency) and the Georgia Department of Education. The winners for Brooks County High School are 9th grade poetry- Savannah Wilkes, "The Calm Storm," 10th grade poetry- Kaylee Thompson and Charlee Cain, "Moonlight Dancers," 10th grade fiction- Kaylee Thompson, "The Algae-Covered Locket," and 11th grade poetry- Mary Davis, "Touch of a Rose."
